Stephen Jones on Jason Garrett: ‘He’s a football guy. He wants to coach.’

Jason Garrett’s unemployment didn’t last long.

After being let go by the Dallas Cowboys after nine-plus seasons as head coach, Garrett landed as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones wasn’t surprised by the move on either side.

“Not at all. Jason’s a football guy. He wants to go coach,” Jones said on Tuesday from the Senior Bowl. “He’s a great offensive mind. They got a good one in coach Garrett in my mind.”

As far as the Giants being the landing spot, Jones said: “He’s from New Jersey. I know what the organization thinks of him. He was through there as a quarterback and it’s just, always wish Jason nothing but the best.

“He was nothing but a class act here and know that he’ll certainly help the Giants get on that road to where they want to go as well.”

Jones added that Garrett will have plenty of young, promising players to work with as the Giants build their team around quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.

“Certainly he’s got some good tools to work with up there,” Jones said. “We’ve seen them between the quarterback and the running back, they’ve got some good receivers up there, so he’s going to have a lot to work with. We’re going to get to see him twice a year.”

The Cowboys could also see Jason Witten on the Giants’ sidelines. A report circulated recently that said Witten could follow Garrett in New York, should he want to continue his playing days in 2020.

Witten is a free agent, but Jones refused to speculate on his future.

“Really nothing there to comment on,” Jones said.
