Adam Henry helps round out Cowboys new staff; Jason Garrett has new job with Giants
The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff under new coach Mike McCarthy is now nearly complete with the addition of receivers coach Adam Henry, and former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has landed with a division rival.
Henry came to the Cowboys from the Cleveland Browns, where he coached receivers for the past two seasons. The opening was necessary because the Cowboys didn’t retain Sanjay Lal, who had two years remaining on his contract.
The Cowboys now have a lead coach at every position but could still bring Leon Lett back as an assistant defensive-line coach.
Garrett agreed to become the new offensive coordinator of the New York Giants.
Garrett will now face the Cowboys twice a season as a member of the NFC East rival Giants.
Garrett was fired from the Cowboys after an 8-8 season in 2019, his fourth 8-8 finish in 9½ seasons as head coach.
The Cowboys officially replaced him with McCarthy last week.
Garrett interviewed with the Giants and new coach Joe Judge on Wednesday and accepted the job on Friday. The team announced the hire in a press release.
Garrett was the Cowboys offensive coordinator for 3½ seasons before taking over as head coach midway through the 2010 season.
Garrett has not called plays since 2012. But he is credited with much of Tony Romo’s success early in his career, and he was behind the promotion of Dak Prescott as Romo’s replacement in 2016.
Garrett will not only be in charge of the development of quarterback Daniel Jones, the Giants’ 2019 first-round pick, but his experience will serve as a sounding board for Judge, a first-time head coach who was the special-teams coach in New England before getting the Giants job.
In addition to Henry, the Cowboys coaching staff now features: defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, special-teams coach Jim Tomsula, offensive-line coach Joe Philpin, running backs coach Skip Peete, quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, tight ends coach Lunda Wells, linebackers coach Scott McCurley, secondary coach Maurice Linguist, assistant secondary coach Al Harris and assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko.
The Cowboys may still make a change at strength coach.
