Dallas Cowboys have officially begun search to replace Jason Garrett with 2 interviews
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make an official announcement regarding the fate of head coach Jason Garrett.
But they are already going about the business of searching for his successor.
According to multiple sources, the team already brought in former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis to interview Friday. He was set to leave Saturday. And the team was bringing in former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy for an interview Saturday.
It is the clearest indication of what has been the obvious Garrett resolution. He is gone, as expected after going 8-8 in 2019, his fourth 8-8 finish in 9 1/2 years as head coach; the team is moving on to a new coach in 2020.
Theoretically, the Cowboys don’t have to make an announcement on Garrett, as his contract is set to expire Jan. 14.
Lewis, 61, spent last season as an adviser to Herm Edwards at Arizona State after spending 16 years with the Bengals.
His career record is 131-122-3 in the regular season. His 131 career victories are the most in Bengals history and ranks tied for 24th in NFL history. Lewis led the Bengals to the postseason seven times, including a five-year run from 2011-2015. He never won a playoff game.
McCarthy, 56, was head coach of the Packers from 2006-2018. He compiled a 125-77-2 record over 13 seasons and won Super Bowl XLV.
He has also interviewed with the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants for their head-coaching positions in the past week.
Lewis’ interview satisfies the Rooney Rule, which states the team’s must canvass a minority candidate before making a hire.
So even though the Cowboys have yet to formally announce Garrett’s departure, there is nothing stopping them from officially naming his successor.
What’s known and certain is that the process to find Garrett’s replacement has already begun in earnest.
