Amari Cooper has no plans to leave Dallas Cowboys. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’
Receiver Amari Cooper has yet to sign a long-term extension with the Dallas Cowboys as both sides hoped would happen before the season.
The impasse has something to do with Cooper’s asking price. He is looking for a deal worth more than $18 million annually.
It is also partially rooted in the breakup of his agents, Chafie Fields and Joel Segal.
But none of it matters as far as Cooper’s desired future is concerned.
He wants to remain with the Cowboys and has no interest in testing the waters in free agency.
Cooper, who is making $13.9 million in the last year of his rookie contract, hopes to re-sign as soon as possible if the deal is right.
“Of course. I love it here,” Cooper said. “I want to be here. I just love this situation, my teammates. I just feel it’s the place for me. I’ve enjoyed it a lot. It’s cool. It just feels good to play here, to live here. I’m happy.”
Cooper has 64 catches for 971 yards with seven touchdowns in 2019.
But in 11 games at home at AT&T Stadium since coming over in a trade from the Oakland Raiders midway through last season, the Cowboys receiver has 82 catches for 1,309 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Cooper has not even thought about free agency as he is still focused on this season.
But there is no question where he wants to be.
“Yeah, I mean I’ve approached the situation like if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Cooper said. “Obviously, I’m more productive here than I was in Oakland, so why would I want to change things?”
As far as the Cowboys are concerned, they have no plans of letting Cooper get away. Owner Jerry Jones recently said he sees Cooper retiring as a Cowboy.
The Cowboys can put the franchise or transitional tag on him in free agency, short of a long-term deal.
