Cowboys thrilling final day highlighted by trades, picks of pair of Jacksons from Miami

The Cowboys entered the 2019 NFL Draft not only short of a first-round pick, but short of picks in general.

They only had six picks with nothing in the first round and nothing in the sixth.

After taking defensive tackle Trysten Hill and guard/center Connor McGovern in the second and third rounds, respectively, on Friday, they took dynamic running back/returner Tony Pollard with their first in the fourth round on Saturday.

The Cowboys then worked the phones, turning their final three picks into five picks.

They traded their second fourth-round pick, 136th overall, to the Bengals for picks 149 and 213.

The Cowboys then moved back again, trading pick 149 to the Raiders for picks 158 and 219, while keeping their own fifth and seventh-round picks at 165 and 241.

The highlight of the moves were the selections of a pair of familiar-named Jacksons from Miami at 149 and 165.

The Cowboys took cornerback Michael Jackson first and then added defensive end Joe Jackson to make the final day “a thriller” for both.

“It happened so fast,” Joe Jackson said. “One moment you’re celebrating for him, the next you’re getting called yourself so there is a lot of emotions.”

Michael Jackson, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, fits the mold of a long and physical cornerback that secondary coach Kris Richard likes.

He started in 26 games over the last two seasons, recording 85 tackles and four interceptions.

“They’re getting a player that is not just a corner, but is just a defensive back,” Michael Jackson said. “If you want me to play safety, I’ll do it. You want me to play nickel, dime, corner, any position on the field and I’ll take it. I’m going to learn the playbook before rookie minicamp starts. I’m just ready to play football.”

“At Miami, I was a physical corner, but I was physical sometimes at the wrong time early in my career. The more I just stayed around Coach (Mike) Rumph and learned what he learned and took knowledge from him about the game, I learned when to be physical and when to use that to try to get to the line.”

It is a position of need because cornerback Byron Jones is coming off hip surgery and won’t be ready until the start of the season. He is also in the final year of his contract as is cornerback Anthony Brown.

Joe Jackson led the Hurricanes with 9 sacks in 2018.

Joe Jackson is a physical defensive end who racked up 129 tackles, 35.5 tackles for a loss and 22.5 sacks in three seasons at Miami.

“I’m a big body,” Joe Jackson said. “I’m going to be a hammer against the run and a guy who will be polished against the pass rush. I can go and get a quarterback as well so I’m an every-down player.”
