Lucas Oil Stadium has been home to great memories for Cowboys linebacker
Jaylon Smith is going home.
The Dallas Cowboys linebacker who played at Notre Dame after growing up in Indiana will play his sixth game at Lucas Oil Stadium when the Cowboys visit the Indianapolis Colts at noon Sunday.
The Fort Wayne, Ind., native won four Class 2A state championships with Bishops Luers High School at Lucas Oil Stadium. And he beat Purdue with Notre Dame in 2014.
“It’s home-field advantage for me. I’m excited to be back,” said Smith, who expects to have 100 friends and family on hand for what could be an NFC East clinching day for the Cowboys. Dallas (8-5) can clinch the title with a win or an Eagles or Redskins loss.
Smith didn’t grow up a Colts fan, though. His favorite players was linebacker Mike Vrabel, who was in his prime with the Patriots from 2001-2008. Smith didn’t want to say he grew up a Patriots fan.
“The Cowboys are my favorite team now,” he said.
Linebacker Sean Lee may be available for the first time in nearly two months. Smith and Leighton Vander Esch are happy for their teammate, even if it means less playing time.
“When Sean is healthy he’s a great player. He’s still got juice in the tank,” he said. “I’ve done nothing but learn from him. I’m happy to have him back. He’s going to be out there making some plays so it’ll be a great thing.”
