Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott reacts to Urban Meyer’s retirement

Ezekiel Elliott was surprised to learn that his former coach at Ohio State Urban Meyer is retiring after the Buckeyes play in the Rose Bowl.

The Dallas Cowboys running back was the star player when Meyer’s Buckeyes beat Oregon to win the 2014 National Championship game at AT&T Stadium.

“Coach Meyer has had a great career and he’s done great things at Florida and Ohio State University,” Elliott said. “He’s changed so many young men’s lives.”

Elliott said he’ll wait a week or two to reach out by phone to wish his old coach all the best.

“We obviously shared very special moment. He’s done a lot of great things,” he said. “I congratulate him for having a successful career. I don’t like to hit the guy the same day because everyone is hitting him that day. I’ll make sure I give him a call in a couple weeks when things have calmed down.”

The No. 6 Buckeyes play No. 9 Washington on Jan. 1.
