The Cowboys are the NFL’s most valuable franchise, so why is Jerry Jones so cheap?
The Cowboys are “rich.”
But it doesn’t show on the field.
Last week, the franchise once again topped Forbes’ list of the most valuable NFL franchises. Jerry Jones’ team is reportedly worth a cool $5 billion.
However, where that money goes is a bit more complicated. Dallas ranks 15th out of 32 teams in available cap space ($9,241, 945), according to Spotrac.
As of right now, the roster currently counts $175,832,839 in salary cap dollars. That figure ranks just above the league average.
However, the franchise has one of the lowest on-field payrolls of any team in the NFL.
According Spotrac’s 2018 cash totals for all active players of each NFL team, the Cowboys only spend $149,496,99 in cash on players.
That figure ranks 29th out of 32 teams in the NFL.
Up to this point, the Cowboys will hand out $27,969,272 to players in dead cap money. That number is the second-highest dead cap hit of any team in the NFL, trailing only the Buffalo Bills.
In total, the organization will pay Orlando Scandrick, Dez Bryant and Tony Romo $19,181,021 in dead money against the cap.
And all of these financial issues exist before while quarterback Dak Prescott carries a cap hit of $725,848. That figure gives Prescott the 56th highest cap hit among quarterbacks in the NFL.
