Cowboys work out this former OU star quarterback in addition to Brice Butler on Monday
In addition to an admitted interest bringing back receiver Brice Butler, former Oklahoma star quarterback Landry Jones, who was a fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013, was among the players who worked out for the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
Jones was cut by the Steelers on Sept. 1.
Jones could be a veteran option at backup quarterback behind starter Dak Prescott. That position could become more critical with the team using Prescott as a runner more this season than in past, thus risking him to injury.
It’s no secret that current backup Cooper Rush struggled during training camp and the preseason. Third-string quarterback Mike White is a developmental rookie prospect.
Jones had an 8-7 record as a starter in Pittsburgh.
Coach Jason Garrett said the workouts were simply informational in case they need to make a move down the line.
“We brought in a lot of guys,” Garrett said. “We had over 20 guys workout today. Landry was the quarterback who was here. We had three receivers and four defensive linemen and six defensive backs and a number of other guys in there for the workout. So what you try to do really throughout the year at different times is make sure that you work guys out, see who’s available on the street, continue to refine your short list if something were to happen due to an injury on your team and that’s really what the essence of today was.”
Butler wasn’t part of the workout. Garrett said the Cowboys will make a decision on adding him back to the roster on Tuesday. Butler did visit the Cowboys late Monday afternoon with the intention of signing.
Garrett no receiver would be released to make room for Butler. The prospective move would come at another position.
“Just to be deeper there,” Garrett said when asked about why there was a need to add a seventh receiver to the roster. He is someone we like. He’s done some good things for us. We will make that decision in a day or so.”
