Referee known for Cowboys' 'Dez Catch' and 'Index Card' games calling it a career

Most referees want to stay out of the headlines in any games they officiate.

But that hasn't been the case with Gene Steratore and the Dallas Cowboys in recent years.

Steratore drew the ire of all Cowboys fans in the 2014 playoffs with his controversial decision to overturn what appeared to be a clean catch by Dez Bryant against the Green Bay Packers. Then he made headlines again last season when the Cowboys took on the Oakland Raiders.

Steratore used an index card to determine whether the Cowboys had a first down late in the game, and ruled in favor of the Cowboys this time around.

Well, those drama-filled moments in Steratore-officiated games will be no more. The longtime NFL official announced his retirement on Friday.

Still, it begs the question ... how will you remember Steratore more?
