Super Bowl 50: Early look at the big game, historical numbers
Broncos vs. Panthers
5:30 p.m. Feb. 7, Santa Clara, Calif. TV: KTVT/Ch. 11
It’s the Big 5-0 for the NFL’s biggest game.
It’s so big that the league went back to numbers instead of Roman numerals.
Super Bowl 50 will be held Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.
The league is breaking for one year its tradition of using Roman numbers. It goes back to Roman numbers next season for Super Bowl LI, set for Feb. 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Until then, here’s an early look at Super Bowl 50:
Halftime sounds
Global superstars Coldplay and Beyonce will perform at the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 halftime show.
The two artists have collaborated on a pair of songs in the past.
Coldplay front man Chris Martin is designing the show that will honor 50 years of the game.
Beyonce is one of the world’s most exciting music performers and is making a second appearance at a Super Bowl. She and Destiny’s Child were the halftime entertainment in Super Bowl XLVII.

Fan-friendly upgrade
The NFL will kick off Super Bowl 50 festivities in the San Francisco Bay Area by hosting participating teams in prime time at Super Bowl Opening Night Fueled by Gatorade on Monday, Feb. 1, at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif.
Super Bowl Opening Night is a shift from the traditional media day held on Tuesday morning. This will be the first time the players and coaches address the media while in the Bay Area.
Fans will sit in the stands of the arena and watch thousands of media interview members of the Super Bowl teams.
Real hardware
The Vince Lombardi Trophy, given to the Super Bowl winner, weighs 7 pounds and is 22 inches tall.
It’s made of sterling silver and takes 72 man hours to craft by hand. It was designed in 1967.
NFC edge
Since 1970, NFC teams have won 26 Super Bowl compared with 23 for the AFC.
In case anyone forgot, New England won last year’s game 28-24 over Seattle.
The AFC is the home team in this year’s game.
Cowboys touch
No Super Bowl is complete without mentioning the Dallas Cowboys in some way.
The Cowboys stumbled to a 4-12 record this season, but they have five Super Bowl titles on their résumé, tied for second with San Francisco.
Pittsburgh has the most with six titles.
Who has lost the most Super Bowls?
Denver has lost five Super Bowls, but the Broncos also have two winning trophies.
Five rings
Charles Haley is the only player in NFL history to win five Super Bowls.
Haley was a member of two San Francisco championship teams. He was traded to Dallas where he won three more Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys.
Haley was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August and was inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011.
