NFL Insider: Charean Williams’ five cents
My five cents
1 Peyton Manning has looked nothing like himself. Although the Denver Broncos are 2-1 in their past three games, Manning has completed 56 of 84 passes for 717 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions. That works out to an interception every 14 attempts this month. How bad has it been? Manning was asked about retirement last week.
2 The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t expected to re-sign Mark Sanchez, who becomes a free agent after the season, but they have a decision to make on Nick Foles. Is he a franchise quarterback? Or do the Eagles need to invest in one via free agency or the draft? Foles will miss his eighth consecutive game with a broken collarbone.
3 It appears the Chicago Bears will be searching for a new head coach for the second time in three years. Marc Trestman’s record stands at 13-18. His future seemed a forgone conclusion after back-to-back home losses to the Cowboys and the Saints.
4 The Buffalo Bills ranked second in rushing last season with 2,307 yards, their highest single-season total since 1992. But they rank only 25th this season with 1,378 rushing yards. If they don’t gain at least 174 yards against the New England Patriots, they will finish with their lowest total in a 16-game season and their worst in any season since 1971.
5 The Cleveland Browns used the eighth overall pick on Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert. He played only 17 snaps last week, and played that many only because Joe Haden missed the game with a shoulder injury. Gilbert ranks 15th among Browns defenders with 27 tackles. He has one interception, which he returned 23 yards for a touchdown.
