NBA moves All-Star Game to New Orleans
A superb first half of the 2016-2017 NBA season will land a player in New Orleans, not Charlotte, next season.
New Orleans has been selected to host NBA All-Star 2017 weekend, the NBA announced Friday. The 66th NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Smoothie King Center, home of the New Orleans Pelicans. The game was previously scheduled to be held in Charlotte, N.C.
The game was moved because of the state's House Bill 2, which limits anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the state.
The game will be televised by TNT.
This will New Orleans; third time to host the event. The previous times were in 2008 and 2014. LeBron James was the most valuable player in the 2008 game. Kyrie Irving was MVP in the 2014 game.
In addition, in the wake of the devastating floods that have affected thousands of Louisiana residents, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) have joined the Pelicans and the New Orleans Saints to provide financial and other ongoing support of the flood rescue, relief and rebuilding efforts.
