Who’s in, who’s out: analyzing the Dallas Mavericks’ roster
Justin Anderson, F. Technically has four years remaining on rookie contract: After a slow start in the transition from college to the pros, Anderson was a huge factor in the Mavericks’ advancing to the playoffs.
J.J. Barea, G. Three years remaining on contract: The diminutive 10-year veteran was in the midst of his best season when he sustained an injury. Barea says he’ll need arthroscopic surgery to clean up the meniscus in his right knee.
Jeremy Evans, F. One year left on contract: Evans appeared in just 30 games and underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on March 17 to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Raymond Felton, G. Unrestricted free agent: He had a tremendous season. Based on all the Mavs’ backcourt injuries this season, Dallas should step up and pay the man.
Devin Harris, G. Two years left on contract, second year a team option: First up: surgeries. Harris has a torn ligament in his left thumb and an injured great toe on his left foot.
David Lee, C. Unrestricted free agent: Acquired on Feb. 22, Lee was a positive on the floor and in the locker room as he brought his championship personality to town. But he is 33, and an injury to his right heel limited him to just two playoff games.
Wesley Matthews, G. Signed for three more years: A hard-nosed, confident player, Matthews was surprisingly in the season-opening lineup after undergoing surgery to repair his left torn Achilles tendon in March 2015. He made a team-high 189 3-pointers this season.
JaVale McGee, C. Team option: Injuries slowed McGee’s progress this season. He seemed like the forgotten soul when healthy. Coach Rick Carlisle, however, gave high praise to McGee at the exit interviews.
Salah Mejri: C. Two more years remaining on contract. Last summer the Mavericks found Mejri, the first Tunisian to play in the NBA. The confident, 29-year-old rookie is a shot-blocking, rebounding machine who must be re-signed.
Dirk Nowitzki: F. Plans to opt out of final year of contract and become an unrestricted free agent. Nowitzki probably will play two more years to give him a nice round figure of 20 years before he retires.
Zaza Pachulia, C. Unrestricted free agent. Pachulia was one of the nice finds of last season. He had 23 double-doubles in the first 56 games, but only three in the last 26 games when his playing time decreased. The Mavs, however, have eyes for Dwight Howard, McGee and Mejri.
Chandler Parsons, F. Can opt out of contract and become unrestricted free agent: A top talent and recruiter with star potential, Parsons underwent surgery in March for the second year in a row on his right knee. That concerns him and the Mavs.
Dwight Powell, C. Restricted free agent: The Mavs can match any offer Powell receives. When given consistent minutes — and when he stayed out of foul trouble — Powell was a high-wire act who gave the team some meaningful contributions.
Charlie Villanueva, F. Unrestricted free agent: Even Villanueva would admit that this was arguably the worst season of his 11-year career. That could lead to the Mavericks going in another direction.
Deron Williams, G. Plans to opt out of final year of contract and become unrestricted free agent. Since he and his family are comfortable here, Williams would love to stay home and continue playing for the Mavs. He also needs surgery to repair a sports hernia.
