DALLAS -- Dwight Powell really showed in Wednesday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets that he wasn’t just a throw-in player during last month’s Rajon Rondo trade.
Powell collected 11 points and five rebounds before fouling out in 29 minutes during the 114-107 loss to the Nuggets. Along the way, the center/power forward showed enough promise that the Mavs may consider using him in certain situations down the line.
"He showed some toughness tonight, he showed some athleticism, he can shoot the ball,’’ coach Rick Carlisle said. “He was competing hard against a very competitive bunch of front line guys from Denver.
"I’ve like what he's been doing in practice when we've had practices. We haven't had many. But he did good things, so it was a good showing on his part.’’

When the Mavs acquired Rondo in last month’s trade with Boston, Powell was the other player Dallas received from the Celtics in that blockbuster deal.
