Devin Harris doesn’t know if he’ll play Friday against Orlando
In the Dallas Mavericks’ first practice since the All-Star break, guard Devin Harris went through noncontact drills Wednesday afternoon at American Airlines Center.
But coach Rick Carlisle isn’t sure if the 12-year veteran will be ready to play Friday night’s game in Orlando.
Harris missed the final nine games before the All-Star break after he sprained his left great toe during a Jan. 24 game in Houston. The one-time All-Star has been cautiously trying to get to the stage where he can play again, but the results haven’t been overwhelming.
“I tested it pretty well [over the All-Star break],” Harris said. “I had some good days, had some bad days. Today was a good body of work, the first kind of practice action I’ve seen in a while. It ended on a good note [and] we’ll see tomorrow and kind of go from there.”
The injured toe is located on the same foot Harris had surgery on nearly two years ago, so the Mavericks are in no rush to get Harris back on the court.
“It’s a bunion on a toe, there’s a nerve involved, your feet are sensitive areas,” Carlisle said. “Look, I’m no doctor, so don’t get me wrong — and it’s a surgical foot.
“It’s going to be based on how he feels, but today appeared to be a step in a positive direction. But then you’ve always got to wait and see how the guy does when he wakes up in the morning.”
Harris started taking some new medication before the All-Star break that he received from a specialist he visited in New York. He said that medication is working.
“No pain right now as we speak,” Harris said. “I still have some setbacks here and there, but I think we’re moving in the right direction.”
Harris wants to see “more body of work” with minimal pain to his toe before he declares himself fit to play.
Asked if he plans to play Friday, Harris said: “It depends on tomorrow, talking with the trainers and seeing what else I need to do. I am optimistic. I haven’t been, but I am optimistic. It is progress.”
Carlisle is listing Harris as day-to-day.
“If he’s doing well tomorrow, that’s a great sign and we’ll see where he is,” Carlisle said. “If he’s available and feels good, he’ll be active [Friday]. And if not, then we’ll have to roll with the guys that we have available.”
