The Pistons were 2-17 in the 19 games prior to waiving Smith. ... Entering Tuesday, Detroit was 22nd in the NBA in scoring at 96.5 points per game, but the Pistons are moving the ball much better and averaged 108.4 points in the previous five wins before Tuesday’s victory. ... Greg Monroe (14.4 ppg, 9.1 rpg), Brandon Jennings (14.1 ppg, 6.3 apg) and Andre Drummond (12.8 ppg, 13.1 rpg) are the top contributors for the Pistons.

About the Mavericks: Dallas is 7-2 since acquiring point guard Rajon Rondo, who had 10 rebounds and 14 assists during Monday’s 96-88 overtime win in Brooklyn. ... The Mavs own a season-high tying six-game winning streak. They also won six games in a row from Nov. 11-21. ... The Mavs are feasting on teams from the Eastern Conference at 16-3. All three of the losses came in Dallas — to Miami (105-96), Indiana (111-100) and Atlanta (105-102). ... On Dec. 17, the Mavs won in Detroit 117-106 thanks to a season-high 32 points by Chandler Parsons, who made 10-of-17 shots.
