About the Lakers: They produced one of the signature wins in the NBA this season when they surprised everyone and upset the NBA’s hottest team, the Golden State Warriors, 115-105, on Tuesday. And the Lakers did it without Kobe Bryant, who sat out due to general soreness and might again against the Mavs. Against the Warriors, the Lakers handed out 28 assists, put seven players in double-figure scoring and got 54 points from their bench, including a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds from Carlos Boozer. … Although they’re off to one of their worst starts ever, the Lakers also have big road wins this season at San Antonio (112-100 in overtime), at Atlanta (114-109) and at Houston (98-92), and a home victory over Toronto (129-122 in overtime).
About the Mavs: History is likely to be made at some point Friday since Dirk Nowitzki needs just six points to pass Elvin Hayes and become the No. 8 all-time leading scorer in NBA history. … After losses to Atlanta and Phoenix in their games Monday and Tuesday, the Mavs are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season. … The Mavs embarrassed the Lakers, 140-106, in Dallas on Nov. 21, outscoring them 72-47 in the second half. It was the most points the Mavs scored in a game since they defeated Phoenix 140-116 on Apr. 5, 2009. … The Mavs are 1-2 since acquiring Rajon Rondo Dec. 18 from Boston. … In his last three games, Nowitzki is averaging 17 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 17 of 39 from the field. — Dwain Price
