DALLAS – Late in the second half of Sunday’s Blue-White scrimmage at American Airlines Center, Dallas Mavericks forward Charlie Villanueva found himself negotiating a breakaway fast break dunk.
After the Blue beat the White, 42-32, Villanueva promised one thing to the assembled media by saying: "There will be a lot more of those, I’ll tell you that."
Looking svelte and playing with a lot of energy before a crowd of 4,500, Villanueva poured in a game-high 13 points for the White team Sunday. More importantly, unlike last year when Villanueva survived the final cut-down day to make the Mavs’ 15-man roster, no such mystery should occur this year.
"Last year he resurrected his career," coach Rick Carlisle said. "This year he’s looking to build on it and right now he’s well positioned to do that.

"He’s coming in (to training camp) in very good shape, very focused this year."
Villanueva is so focused that he hasn’t even allowed a sore right ankle to slow him down.
"I had a little minor setback in practice with my ankle, but other than that I’m feeling good, body feeling good," Villanueva said. "Just like you said, I’m just picking up where I left off.
"I’m feeling a little bit lighter, I’m feeling a little younger. I’ve just got to get better every day."
