Dallas Stars say Mavericks’ Las Vegas offices violate franchise deal with city

The legal battle between the Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks over American Airlines Center continues to rage, with the hockey franchise now alleging the basketball team has committed the same violation it was accused of in a lawsuit last month.

The Stars now claim the Mavericks violated their franchise agreement with the city of Dallas, which requires that the team’s principal corporate and executive offices be located in the city of Dallas.

Joshua M. Sandler, counsel for the Stars, put out a statement about the claim.

“In 2024, according to filings with the Texas Secretary of State, the new owners of the Mavericks designated the location for the team’s principal corporate and executive offices as Las Vegas, Nevada, which is 1,200 miles away and located outside the State of Texas,” Sandler said. “In other words, the Mavericks engaged in the very conduct they allege entitles them to take full control of the American Airlines Center.”

The dispute between the two American Airlines Center occupants hit a fever pitch when the Mavericks sued the Stars for breach of contract, alleging the Stars were violating the same franchise agreement by having their headquarters located at 2601 Avenue of the Stars in Frisco, where it has been since 2003.

The Mavericks also alleged that the Stars had obstructed improvements to the arena, while the Stars claim the Mavericks want to reduce them to tenants and drive them out of the city of Dallas.
