Why did SMU’s head football coach criticize the Dallas Mavericks for trading Luka Doncic?
The Dallas Mavericks’ trade of Luka Doncic has been highly controversial. Some have criticized general manager Nico Harrison for giving up one of the NBA’s best players in his prime without fielding multiple offers.
One of those critics was SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee who posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he couldn’t understand the move.
“After almost 24 hours trying to figure out the reason to trade away a generational player … I’ve still got nothing. Feels WAY overthought,” said Lashlee, “I sure hope it works out for everyone, but sure hate it for our city to lose such an icon who embraced Dallas.”
Doncic’s Mavs career got off to a historic start, earning a first-team All-NBA selection in his second season becoming the first player since Tim Duncan to earn first-team All-NBA honors in their rookie or sophomore seasons.
Doncic followed the feat up by earning first-team All-NBA in each of the ensuing four seasons including last year.
Many Mavs fans agreed with Lashlee’s tweets with some voicing their displeasure with the trade at the American Airlines Center.
