Dallas Mavericks

Everything fans need to know before Dallas Mavericks’ season opener against the Spurs

The defending Western Conference champion Dallas Mavs face the San Antonio Spurs in their first game of the 2024 NBA season on Thursday, Oct. 24

This will be the second straight year the Mavs have opened the season versus the Spurs and the team is hoping for a repeat of last year’s 126-119 victory.

Here’s what fans need to know before the two Texas rivals meet.

Tickets

Fans can still buy tickets for the American Airlines Center opener from the Mavs website starting at $52 or from StubHub starting at $42.

Season outlook

After making it to the NBA Finals last season, expectations are high for the Mavs after the additions of Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes. The team did lose defensive ace Derrick Jones Jr. to the Clippers but will rely on team defense to replace the versatile wing defender.

The Mavs offense should be among the NBA’s top units with the addition of Thompson’s shooting with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s playmaking skills and if young players like Jaden Hardy, who just received a three-year $18 million deal, and Dereck Lively II continue to improve the team could have one of the Western Conference’s deepest rosters.

Odds for the 2024 season

The Mavs (+1100) head into the season tied with the Denver Nuggets for the sixth-best odds of winning the NBA Finals trailing the Boston Celtics (+350), Oklahoma City Thunder (+650), New York Knicks (+750), Philadelphia 76ers (+1000) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (+1000).

According to the oddsmakers, superstar Luka Doncic will end the 2024 NBA season by winning his first-ever MVP award with the league’s top odds at +330. Doncic is followed by Shai Gilgeous Alexander (+380), Nikola Jokic (+430), Giannis Antetokounmpo (+850) and Anthony Edwards (+850).

Injuries

Doncic missed the entire preseason with a calf contusion on his left leg but will be available to play against the Spurs on Thursday.

Fellow guard Dante Exum was also injured in the preseason and is expected to miss three months after getting surgery to fix his injured wrist.

TV Schedule

Early in the offseason, the Mavs announced they would air non-nationally televised games on KFAA for the upcoming season with 15 games also set to air on the WFAA.

Fans can watch the games on both of those channels for free over the air or using a digital antenna. For fans without cable capabilities, there is a digital subscription, starting at $14.99 a month or $124.99 for the entire season to stream non-nationally televised Mavs games.

The streaming platform, called MavsTV, will also feature game coverage, exclusive footage and other forms of original content.
