Melvin Hunt joins Rick Carlisle’s staff

DALLAS – Melvin Hunt has been hired by the Dallas Mavericks as the lead assistant to coach Rick Carlisle, according to a source.

Hunt replaces Monte Mathis, who has been offered the head coaching job of the Texas Legends of the D-League if he doesn’t find something more suitable to his liking. Eduardo Najera, formerly the coach of the Legends, will join the Mavs’ scouting staff.

Hunt, 45, replaced fired Denver coach Brian Shaw on an interim basis this past season and led the Nuggets to a 10-13 record while drawing high praise from his players. Shaw was fired on Mar. 3.

A Tallulah, LA native, Hunt played for Baylor from 1987-’91 and was a three-year starter for the Bears. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master’s degree in education from Baylor.

In addition to coaching the Nuggets, Hunt has worked as an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
