Report: Mavs interested in trading for Jimmy Butler. What would they have to give up?
The Mavericks want to to trade for Jimmy Butler.
They are not alone.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Mark Cuban’s franchise, along with the Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, are interested in acquiring the star forward from the Timberwolves.
But what would it take to bring Butler to Dallas?
Right now, it’s unknown. Although, the Mavericks are up against the NBA salary cap (per spotrac.com).
So, while fans would probably like to see Wesley Matthews and his hefty cap hit walk out the door, the front office would almost certainly need to send a real asset back Minnesota’s way.
Forbes.com has a solid breakdown of the financial particulars here.
The Timberwolves would probably want that asset to be either forward Harrison Barnes or second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr.
