Dallas Mavericks add Heat Summer League player Gian Clavell with minimum deal

The Dallas Mavericks hope they have uncovered a gem from their highly productive NBA Summer League experience in one of the team’s summer foes: former Colorado State standout Gian Clavell.

Clavell, 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, chose to sign a partially guaranteed minimum deal with the Mavericks, ESPN.com’s Tim McMahon reported.

The undrafted guard, who was the Mountain West Conference player of the year at Colorado State while averaging 20.4 points a game last season, was plucked off the Miami Heat’s Summer League roster. Clavell scored 18 points against the Mavericks teams in Las Vegas, going 4 of 7 on 3-point attempts.

Clavell, a native of Puerto Rico, told ESPN he would be “forever grateful” to the Heat for giving him a chance.

NBA teams, the Sun Sentinel of Orlando, Fla., reported, are seeking players who can be eventually funneled to their developmental-league affiliates, the rechristened NBA G League.

Clavell’s deal is not a two-way deal, media outlets reported, but can be converted later. The Mavs used one of their two available two-way contracts on former Baylor star Johnathan Motley. NBA teams are allowed to have up to two players under two-way contracts who will spend the bulk of the season in the NBA G League and not more than 45 days with their NBA team.
