Dallas Mavericks thrashed in Denver as preseason ends
The Dallas Mavericks fell behind by 18 points at halftime and were thumped for the second straight preseason game, losing to the Denver Nuggets 101-75 Friday night in the preseason finale.
Danilo Gallinari scored 16 points and didn’t miss a shot in 16 minutes for the Nuggets. Gallinari was 4 for 4 from the field, including 2 for 2 on 3-pointers, and 6 for 6 at the free throw line.
The Mavericks’ veterans again showed the effects of coming along slowly in training camp. Dirk Nowitzki scored only eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 29 minutes. Wesley Matthews scored 10 points and was the only Maverick in double figures. Harrison Barnes scored eight points on 4-of-9 shooting in 26 minutes.
Mavericks center Andrew Bogut had five fouls in the first half and was out early in the third quarter. Dallas shot 38 percent, including 24 percent on 3-pointers. Denver shot 51 percent.
Dallas trailed 51-33 at halftime. Bogut played 18 minutes in the first half and the other starters, Nowitzki, Matthews, Barnes and Deron Williams, played 19 minutes each.
Denver started the second half on a 7-0 run to build its lead to 58-33. The Nuggets had stretched it to a whopping 77-49 lead after three quarters.
Dallas was coming off a 106-91 drubbing at home in a preseason game Wednesday against the Houston Rockets.
Guard J.J. Barea, who suffered a left elbow injury in practice Tuesday, and forward Quincy Acy (sprained right foot) didn’t play.
The Mavs now look to cut their roster to 15 players before Monday’s deadline. Argentine forward Nicolas Brussino is expected to make the opening roster. Brussino’s contract became fully guaranteed Thursday, ESPN.com reported.
Dallas opens the regular season Wednesday night at Indiana. The home opener is Friday against the Rockets.
Nuggets point guard Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle injury) missed his third straight preseason game.
