Gov. Abbott paces the IndyCar field at Texas Motor Speedway as pro sports return

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott attended Saturday night’s Genesys 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.

It marked the state’s first professional sporting event back amid the coronavirus pandemic. The race was closed to the general public.

Abbott was in the pace car to start the race shortly after 7 p.m.

“We are ready to get rolling,” Abbott said in a social media post. “In the pace car to start the race — with the need for speed.”

TMS President Eddie Gossage was pleased to host Abbott at the race. Abbott has been supportive of the return of professional sports amid the pandemic.

Gossage said the track had little issues with the state when it submitted its plan for the race to ensure the health and safety of everyone on the grounds. There was an estimated 900 people on TMS’ property for the race.

“We’re honored to have Gov. Abbott make another visit to Texas Motor Speedway because he’s a big race fan,” Gossage said. “He welcomed the crowd on NBC, which was his opportunity to tell everyone Texas is open more and more everyday as we all deal with COVID-19.

“He is one of our biggest supporters.”

NBC is televising the race on prime-time TV. Defending champion Josef Newgarden won the pole position.
