‘It’s not really there, but it’s there.’ TMS using virtual infield logo for IndyCar race

Texas Motor Speedway is going with a virtual logo on its infield for Saturday’s Genesys 300.

With no fans in the stands and the race a one-day, made-for-TV spectacle, the track decided that painting an actual race logo on the infield grass as it does every race weekend didn’t make sense.

“To paint the logos on the grass for the race is incredibly expensive,” track president Eddie Gossage said. “Not only is it difficult to do, there’s a lot of labor and paint that needs to go into it.”

Instead, Gossage said, the track and NBC have worked out a deal where it will broadcast a virtual Genesys 300 logo the entire race. Viewers at home likely won’t notice a difference.

“It’s not really there, but it’s there,” Gossage said. “It’ll look just like it would if it was painted, when the cameras pan one way or another, you may see it on the corner of your TV. It’s really worked out for us.”

NBC will air the race on prime-time TV with the green flag scheduled to drop at 7:10 p.m. Practice and qualifying will run earlier in the day.

Genesys is in the first year of a three-year sponsorship deal with the track.
