Tigers stump Rangers with 2-0 shutout

Tigers left-hander Matt Boyd held the Rangers scoreless on two hits over seven innings as Detroit evened the series with 2-0 win Saturday night at Globe Life Park. It’s the sixth time the Rangers have been shutout and first since Aug. 5 in Houston.

Pitching: Cole Hamels worked out of several early jams, including the bases loaded in the second. He got Ian Kinsler to tap out back to the mound to escape the jam. The Tigers had the lead-off hitter in four consecutive innings. In the third, the Tigers had the first two hitters on before Elvis Andrus made a nice stop to his right and threw to third for a force out. In the fourth, Jurickson Profar threw out Mike Aviles trying move to third on a single to left. Shin-Soo Choo made a sliding attempt on a blooper near the foul line in right but couldn’t make the play on Kinsler’s double. Jarrod Saltalamacchia attempted to score from first on the play but Choo’s throw home got him thanks to a nice tag by catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Detroit finally busted through with a run in the fifth after three consecutive singles started the inning. Justin Upton’s single to left scored Casey McGehee to make it 1-0. Hamels got Aviles to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to escape more damage. Detroit took 2-0 lead on Dixon Machado’s run-scoring double to the right-field corner. Hamels allowed two runs on 14 hits and three walks over seven innings. Keone Kela pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Hitting: Matt Boyd held the Rangers to two hits through seven innings. Adrian Beltre singled with two outs in the first and Mitch Moreland doubled with two outs in the second before Boyd retired 11 consecutive batters into the sixth. He walked Shin-Soo Choo with one out in the sixth but quickly retired the side. Jonathan Lucroy walked with two outs in the seventh before Moreland grounded out to first. In the ninth, Beltre led off with a single but a fly out by Carlos Beltran and double play groundout by Rougned Odor ended the game.

Notable: Hamels allowed a career-high 14 hits. Only second time he’s allowed 10 more hits this season ... The 14 hits allowed ties the Rangers’ record for most in a game with three others. Last to do it was Matt Harrison in April 2012 against the Rays ... 37,792 was the paid attendance.
