Jonathan Lucroy homers twice as Rangers blast Tigers
The Rangers hit four homers, including two by Jonathan Lucroy, in the first five innings to build a seven-run lead and held on to take the opener against the Tigers 8-5 Friday night at Globe Life Park. Lucroy was 3 for 4 with five RBIs.
The game was delayed because of rain and didn’t start until 9:45 p.m. It ended at 12:48 a.m. Saturday.
Pitching: Yu Darvish allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five. The Tigers scores a run in the second on James McCann’s double. In the seventh, after Elvis Andrus’ throwing error put Casey McGehee on, McCann’s two-run homer pulled the Tigers to within 8-3. After Ian Kinsler doubled, Tony Barnette took over for Darvish with two outs in the seventh. Tyler Collins ripped a two-run homer to make it 8-5. Jeremy Jeffress pitched a scoreless eighth and Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth.
Hitting: The Rangers scored four times in the first on consecutive singles from Ian Desmond, Carlos Beltran and Adrian Beltre, followed by Lucroy’s three-run homer. In the third, Beltran walked before Lucroy hit a two-run homer to left to make it 6-1. Mitch Moreland followed with a solo homer to right. Beltran’s solo homer just inside the foul pole in the right-field corner made it 8-1 in the fifth.
Notable: Lucroy hit two homers in a game for the eighth time in his career and second time with the Rangers ... Beltre’s doubled in the sixth to give him 581 in his career, one shy of tying Cap Anson for 21st of all-time.
