Desmond, Fielder help Rangers rally for 6-5 win
Ian Desmond and Prince Fielder drove in two runs apiece Wednesday, and four relievers worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Cole Hamels as the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5.
The Rangers won the last two games in the three-game series and have won five of their past six games. They are off Thursday ahead off a three-game weekend series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hitting: Ian Desmond’s singles in the third and sixth drove in runs. He was one of four hitters with two hits, joining Ryan Rua, Nomar Mazara and Prince Fielder. ... Fielder entered the game 1 for 20 before a doubling to start the fourth and dropping a two-run double into left in the fifth. ... Each Rua hit, leading off the third and sixth, turned into a run.
Pitching: Cole Hamels allowed two homers in three batters in a three-run fourth inning, squandering a 2-1 lead. The left-hander also allowed unearned runs in the third, thanks to his throwing error, and the sixth, thanks to a wide throw that ended Adrian Beltre’s 44-game errorless streak. ... Hamels allowed nine hits and five runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out nine. ... Tony Barnette got the final out of the sixth. ... Tom Wilhelmsen worked a scoreless seventh, his fifth straight scoreless outing. ... Two reached with two outs in the eighth against Jake Diekman, but he got Austin Jackson looking to end the threat. ... Sam Dyson got his first save of the season, the third of his career.
