Rangers recap: Five-run sixth propels Texas over Orioles
The Rangers scored five times in the sixth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead and held on to take the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday night at Globe Life Park.
Pitching: Cole Hamels left with one out and runners on the corners in the sixth trailing 3-1. Tom Wilhelmsen came in and forced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the jam. Hamels allowed three runs on seven hits and a two walks. He struck out four and allowed four doubles and a solo home run by Mark Trumbo in the fourth which put the Orioles up 2-1.
Keone Kela and Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. Shawn Tolleson pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
Hitting: The Rangers erupted for five runs on six hits in the sixth inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-3 lead. Nomar Mazara had two hits, including a lead-off double in the sixth. Adrian Beltre followed with a one-out single before Mitch Moreland’s blooper fell near the line in shallow left field for a double, scoring Mazara. Ian Desmond followed with an infield single to first base which scored Beltre from third. Rougned Odor cleared the bases with a two-run double to the left-field corner to give Texas a 5-3 lead. Odor moved to third on the throw home and scored on Elvis Andrus’ single to center to make it 6-3.
Notable: The Rangers infield made multiple dazzling plays, including a sliding stop to his right by Andrus in the first, a sliding stop to his right and flip by Odor to start a double play in the eighth and Beltre who made a stop down the line and long throw for the second out in the ninth ... Thursday’s announced attendance was 22,820.
