Rangers spotlight: Phil Klein prefers double feature of ‘Bull Durham’ and ‘Titans’
Texas Rangers right-hander Phil Klein has discerning tastes when it comes to sports films. For baseball and pure comedy, he calls Bull Durham, the 1988 classic starring Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins about life in the minor leagues, the best. Is it because the baseball looks legit?
“No, it’s because it’s a comedy, a lot of true comedy to it,” Klein said. “When he comes in being a veteran guy trying to teach some of the young kids there.”
Bull Durham might have the laughs, but Remember the Titans has the heart and social message. Klein calls that 2000 film starring Denzel Washington and Will Patton the best sports film ever. It’s the true story of a high school football team undergoing racial integration for the first time in 1971.
“Me and my dad have watched that a lot. It’s a pretty impassioned movie and there’s a lot of issues involved outside of sports and I think that’s great,” he said.
