Texas Rangers sign right-hander A.J. Griffin to minor league deal
The Texas Rangers have signed free agent right-hander A.J. Griffin to a minor-league contract with an invitation to major league camp.
Griffin, 27, had Tommy John surgery on April 30, 2014 and didn’t pitch again until August 2015. He is in a throwing program and expected to be ready for spring training.
Griffin was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 13th round of the 2010 amateur draft. He compiled a 3.60 ERA in two seasons with the A’s, including going 14-10 with 3.83 ERA in 200 innings in 2013.
Griffin had a 3.77 ERA in 14 1/3 innings in the minors in 2015 after returning from surgery.
Andrus is Good Guy
The local chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America voted shortstop Elvis Andrus the 2015 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award.
Also announced Monday, former Rangers third baseman Dean Palmer earned the 2016 Mark Holtz Alumni Award. Both awards will be presented at the Texas Rangers Awards Dinner on Jan. 22 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine.
