The Texas Rangers received left-hitting first baseman Andy Wilkins from the Seattle Mariners on a waiver claim.

Wilkins, 27, who throws right-handed, batted .251 with 18 homers and 79 RBIs in 126 games in Triple A in 2015. Wilkins was with six organizations in 2015. He was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Wednesday.

The Rangers already have two left-handed hitting first basemen in Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland. The club also had previously hoped to sign first baseman Mike Napoli but general manager Jon Daniels said that was unlikely last week at the winter meetings in Nashville.

Wilkins grew up in Tulsa and was drafted by the Rangers in the 25th round in 2007, but chose to play at the University of Arkansas.

The Rangers roster is at 38 players.

Toy drive Tuesday

The Rangers will host their annual Cowboy Santas Toy Drive event from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Globe Life Park.

The program provides toys for low-income families in Tarrant County.

Current and former Rangers players, coaches and broadcasters will sign autographs and holiday movies will be shown on the video screen. The Rangers’ KidsZone will be open with drink specials, along with face painting, crafts, and a photo booth with a special appearance by Santa Claus.

The event will be held in Vandergriff Plaza. Fans can park in Lot B and enter through the gift shop.

New, unwrapped toys and books for boys and girls, newborn to age 12, are encouraged and can also be dropped off at the ballpark gift shop or the Fort Worth Team Shop at 316 Main Street during regular store hours and at all Fort Worth police and fire stations.

The deadline to drop off toys is Tuesday night.
