Phillies take Rays outfielder Tyler Goeddel as top pick in 2015 Rule 5 draft

Outfielder Tyler Goeddel was the No. 1 pick in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday morning.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected the 23-year-old Double A prospect from the Tampa Bay Rays organization.

The Texas Rangers, who drafted Delino DeShields from the Houston Astros a year ago in the Rule 5 process, passed with their No. 23 overall pick this year. Overall, 16 players were selected in the major league phase of the draft.

The Red Sox took Rangers’ High A right-hander Anyelo Leclerc in the minor league phase of the draft. He posted a 5.52 ERA in 45 2/3 innings for High Desert in 2015.
