Rangers recap: Angels hold on to hold off Texas’ celebration
The Texas Rangers will have to wait another day to clinch the American League West title. The Los Angeles Angels scored a run in the ninth to beat the Rangers 2-1 Friday night at Globe Life Park. The teams turn around for Game 3 of the series at noon Saturday. Texas can clinch the division title with a win or an Astros loss late Friday at Arizona. The Astros were leading 10-2 in the sixth inning as of 10:40 p.m. Friday. The Angels kept their A.L. Wildcard hopes alive with the win.
Pitching: Martin Perez allowed a first-inning run but held the Angels scoreless on one hit over the next six innings. Perez retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. Perez allowed one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over seven innings.
Sam Dyson retired the side in the eighth, including two strikeouts against Erick Aybar and Kole Calhoun. Shawn Tolleson started the ninth with the scored tied at 1-1 and promptly surrendered a lead-off triple to Mike Trout. Albert Pujols’ single to center scored Trout to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.
Hitting: Shin-Soo Choo’s opposite-field homer to left in the fourth tied it at 1-1. Texas had two on with one out thanks to two Erick Aybar errors in the fifth but Chris Gimenez struck out and Delino DeShields flew out to end the inning. In the sixth, Choo led off with a double and Adrian Beltre walked with one out. Mitch Moreland grounded into a force out at second to give Texas runners on the corners with two outs and Josh Hamilton at the plate. The Rangers were retired in order in the ninth. Jered Weaver held the Rangers to two one run on two hits over six innings.
Notable: DeShields collected his 25th stolen base Friday, seventh most for a rookie in club history ... Choo tied his career-high with 22 homers ... Friday’s sold out crowd of 47,219 is the third-largest this season at Globe Life Park. The others were the home opener vs. the Astros on April 10 and against the Angels on July 4. A total of 12,911 tickets were sold for Friday’s game since Thursday ... Tolleson pitched for the fourth consecutive game Friday night. It’s the second time he’s done that this season. He also did it July 29 through Aug. 1.
