Rangers recap: Tigers’ Justin Verlander holds down Rangers offense
The Rangers rallied for three late runs, including two in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate but the Tigers escaped with a 7-4 win in the series opener Monday at Globe Life Park. Texas has lost three consecutive games and could lose ground on the Houston Astros, who were beating the Mariners 3-2 in the eighth late Monday night in Seattle.
Pitching: Colby Lewis allowed six runs, including five in the fifth inning and left after 4 2/3 innings. The Tigers collected 10 hits against Lewis, including two doubles and a three-run homer to Tyler Collins in the fifth to blow the game open for Detroit. Anthony Bass replaced Lewis and allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings. Tanner Scheppers, Luke Jackson and Nick Martinez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Hitting: Prince Fielder’s solo homer in the fourth tied it at 1-1. Fielder later doubled and had two of the Rangers’ six hits against starter Justin Verlander. Verlander left after throwing 107 pitching in six innings. Verlander was able to escape a bases-loaded jam after Fielder’s homer by getting Elvis Andrus to pop out and striking out Rougned Odor and Chris Gimenez. Gimenez singled to lead off the seventh and later scored on Fielder’s groundout to make it 7-2. In the ninth, the Rangers scored twice on Fielder’s two-run, bases-loaded single against former Rangers closer Neftali Feliz. Adrian Beltre was at the plate with two on and one out but grounded into a game-ending double play.
Notable: Fielder collected his 56th multi-hit game ... Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez left the game with left quad soreness ... Leonys Martin replaced Delino DeShields in the center to start the seventh. It’s Martin’s first time in the field since Aug. 3.
