Despite injuries and some previous offensive struggles, the Texas Rangers find themselves amid a five-game winning streak.
After sweeping the Kansas City Royals at home, the Rangers have picked up two wins against the Cardinals in St. Louis this week.
The Rangers defeated the Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night to put their record back within a game of .500, sitting at 30-31. The Rangers are in second place in the AL West, just 2.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners.
Nathan Eovaldi started on the mound for the Rangers. The Cardinals got started early, bringing in a run during the second inning off a single. They then added a home run in the fourth inning to make it 2-0.
Rangers second baseman Nicky Lopez provided an RBI during the fifth, allowing center fielder Evan Carter to score. Designated hitter Joc Pederson then doubled to right to score Lopez and tie the game at 2-2.
The Rangers added two more runs in the sixth and seventh. Left fielder Alejandro Osuna singled to right to send first baseman Jake Burger home in the sixth, then third baseman Josh Jung hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score Kyle Higashioka.
After the Cardinals tied the game 4-4 in the seventh, Pederson hit a tiebreaking single to put the Rangers up in the ninth, scoring Carter.
The Rangers added two more runs in the ninth off RBIs from Jung and right fielder Brandon Nimmo.
Jakob Junis closed out the game for his fourth save, allowing one hit with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth. Eovaldi four runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk, while Cal Quantrill (3-0) got the win in relief.
Rangers’ recent win streak
Multiple players have stepped up during the Rangers’ longest win streak of the season, none more than Pederson, who has contributed six hits, two home runs, five RBIs and four runs. Jung, Nimmo and Lopez have all hit home runs during the streak.
Shortstop Ezequiel Duran hit a walk-off single in Saturday’s 7-6 victory over the Royals and has contributed seven hits, six RBIs and three runs during the streak. Duran has been filling in for injured star Corey Seager, who last played on May 13 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Rangers will look to extend their winning streak with one more game against the Cardinals at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in St. Louis. Texas will then return home for a three-game series against AL Central leader Cleveland starting at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
