The Texas Rangers’ early fears about ace Jacob deGrom appear to have been calmed.
The two-time Cy Young winner and five-time All-Star is slated to start Tuesday at Baltimore after being scratched from his start Saturday at Philadelphia with a neck injury.
DeGrom has suffered a litany of injuries over the years, but he was healthy last season, going 12-8 with a 2.97 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 172 2/3 innings to win AL Comeback Player of the Year.
The right-hander is scheduled to start against the Orioles at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday opposite right-hander Zach Eflin.
Left-hander Jacob Latz threw four no-hit innings in place of deGrom in Saturday’s 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Phillies, but he will now presumably head back to the bullpen.
The Rangers are 3-1 on the young season after Monday’s 5-2 victory over the Orioles.
Jack Leiter had a quality start, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, and first baseman Jake Burger continued his early tear, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Burger is batting .471 (8-for-17) to start the year with two home runs and six RBIs.
