Sister of former Texas Rangers star Nelson Cruz dies in building collapse
Nelsy Cruz, governor of the Monte Cristi province in the Dominican Republic and sister of former Texas Rangers star Nelson Cruz, was one of dozens who died when the roof of a nightclub collapsed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic early Tuesday, April 8.
Nelson Cruz released a statement about her death from the family on Instagram.
“It is with deep hurt that the Cruz Martinez family shares news of the passing of our dear sister, mother, daughter, aunt and friend: Nelsy M. Cruz Martinez, who lived a life of dedication, commitment, and love for her people and community. We’re grateful for everyone who has shared their love and solidarity with us during this very difficult moment. Her legacy of service and love for others will live on forever in our hearts,” Cruz posted.
Former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera were among the 124 people confirmed dead. Merengue singer Rubby Pérez was performing at the club around midnight, an hour before the collapse, and also died, according to his manager.
It is not yet known what caused the building to collapse, and rescue efforts are still underway.
