Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung is heading to the 10-day injury list

The Texas Rangers are looking to close out their series with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday with their third straight win, but will do so without third baseman Josh Jung, who is headed to the 10-day injury list with neck spasms.

Manager Bruce Bochy announced the decision before the game on Sunday, saying that he expected Jung to only stay the minimum amount of days necessary on the injury list.

“JJ, he will go on the IL with spasms, that he has going on with his neck,” said Bochy, “He probably will get three, four extra days where he could’ve been ready, but maybe that’s a good thing to get this thing cleared up. It’s a recurring issue.”

Jung exited an exhibition game on Monday because of neck stiffness, but played in the Rangers’ first two regular-season games and reaggravated the injury in the seventh inning of Friday’s win over the Red Sox.

The Rangers called up infielder Jonathan Ornelas from the minor leagues to replace Jung on the roster.

The Rangers don’t expect utility man Josh Smith to join Jung on the IL after he left Saturday’s game following a collision with the railing near third base.

“We’re hoping [Smith] can go tomorrow. We got him out here today to see if he could run. Didn’t go very well, but somewhat close. He thinks he could go in today in an emergency,” said Bochy.

The Rangers will close out their series with the Red Sox at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday at Globe Life Field.
