Several teams were interested in Texas Rangers right-hander Yovani Gallardo, but in the end an adequate offer never came to general manager Jon Daniels.

Gallardo, who is a free agent after the season, was happy to stay put. He grew up in Fort Worth and lives near Eagle Mountain Lake.

“I’m happy to be here. I wanted to be a part of this team since Day 1,” he said. “Hopefully, we get to the playoffs, which is what we’re shooting for.”

Daniels said the club took calls from multiple teams on possible trades for Gallardo and other players.

“I think it’s just the nature of the standings right now. There are only a few clubs that are distantly out of it,” Daniels said. “The approach we took was if there was a good baseball trade — truly a great baseball trade — that we could take to ownership and say this makes the Rangers better, we would consider it.”

They also factored in how a potential move would alter the Rangers’ chances this season as well, Daniels said.

“We just didn’t get there. We kind of had an idea what [a trade] would have to look like, and it would have had to be a good baseball trade. That’s the threshold we had set.”

Gallardo said the trade deadline wasn’t a distraction. He has allowed 15 earned runs in his past three starts, a combined 14 innings. He had allowed a combined nine earned runs in his previous 62 2/3 innings.

“I understand how this game works. I’ve seen guys come and go throughout my career,” he said. “It’s definitely tough for you, that’s for sure, to know you might be one of those guys who might get traded. But it’s a good thing when you’re wanted.”

The addition of Cole Hamels to the rotation, Gallardo said, just adds confidence to a veteran clubhouse.

“It shows the players a lot. [The front office is] trying to put the best team out there for us to compete, and it’s up to us to get the job done,” he said. “We were confident before we got Cole. It’s going to make us that much better, allow us to feed off each other. [Hamels] is a guy you want on your team. Just aggressive. You can see that from the other dugout. He’s going to challenge you.”

Reliever added

The Rangers traded two prospects to the Miami Marlins for right-handed reliever Sam Dyson before Friday’s trade deadline.

The Rangers sent catcher Tomas Telis and Triple A Round Rock left-hander Cody Ege to the Marlins.

Dyson turned 27 in May and is under contract control through 2020. He is 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA in 44 innings for Miami this season. Telis made two start for the Rangers after being recalled from Round Rock on July 17. He made his major league debut last season with Texas. Ege has a 1.00 ERA in 45 innings this season in stints for High A High Desert and Double A Frisco.

Catcher picked up

The Rangers received catcher Bobby Wilson on a waiver claim from the Tampa Bay Rays. Right-hander Jon Edwards was optioned to Triple A Round Rock. Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf has been placed on unconditional release waivers.

Wilson, 32, is a .201 career hitter with eight homers and 41 RBIs in 218 games with three teams since 2008. He was hitting .145 with four RBIs in 25 games (16 starts) for the Rays this season. He’s thrown out 6 of 21 runners trying to steal. Wilson started the season with the Rays before being designated for assignment on June 12 and going to Triple A.

Ohlendorf, who had a 3.52 ERA in 7 2/3 innings with the Rangers this season, has struggled with a reoccurring groin strain. He’ll become a free agent Sunday if he clears waivers.

Classy goodbye

Cole and Heidi Hamels are thanking Philadelphia Phillies fans with an ad in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. In the ad, the Hamels thank fans for being “an amazing part of our lives! We will never forget you!” Hamels was in uniform and in the Rangers’ dugout Friday night. He’ll make his first start for Texas on Saturday.

Briefly

▪ Left-hander Jake Diekman, who was part of the Hamels trade, pitched 1 2/3 perfect relief innings Friday.

▪ Chris Gimenez started at catcher Friday after being added from Round Rock.

▪ Injured first baseman Kyle Blanks (tendinitis in both ankles), who has been out since June 17, is expected to begin a rehab assignment in the next 10 days.
