Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer heads to injured list for second time this season
The Texas Rangers are sending pitcher Max Scherzer to the 15-day injured list with shoulder fatigue following his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
Scherzer, 40, has struggled with injuries this season. He missed the beginning of the season recovering from a herniated left disc in his back which delayed his first start until July 23.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner has gone 2-4 with a 3.89 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 39.1 innings this season.
To fill Scherzer’s roster spot, the team called up Walter Pennington from Triple-A affiliate Round Rock Express.
Pennington hails from Broomfield, Colo., and was acquired by the Rangers in the Michael Lorenzen trade. This season Pennington, 26, has gone 6-3 with two saves and a 2.20 ERA with two starts in 38 games. He only has one career major-league appearance, whcih came July 5 against the Colorado Rockies where he gave up zero runs and got his first career strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.
