Rangers recap: Padres rally late for 6-5 win

The Texas Rangers looked poised to win their second straight before the wheels flew off in the ninth inning Saturday as the San Diego Padres rallied for a 6-5 win. The teams finish the series and conclude the first half of the season at Globe Life Park at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.

Pitching: Matt Kemp’s two-run homer gave the Padres a 2-1 lead in the third inning against Colby Lewis. But Lewis held San Diego to three runs on five hits over seven innings before handing it over to the bullpen with a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Lewis allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings. Tanner Scheppers started the eighth and struck out Kemp but came out after an error by shortstop Elvis Andrus put a runner on with one out. Left-hander Sam Freeman replaced Scheppers and retired the next two batters to end the inning. Shawn Tolleson took over in the ninth and blew his first save of the year when Yangervis Solarte sent a two-run, go-ahead homer over the wall in right. The Padres had pulled to within 5-4 on Melvin Upton Jr.’s single to left, which scored Will Venable.

Hitting: Mitch Moreland gave Texas a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo homer in the second inning. He leads the club with 15 homers. The Rangers were poised for a big inning in the third after James Shields loaded the bases with no outs. Shin-Soo Choo grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, which tied it at 2-2. Prince Fielder followed with an opposite-field single through the left side to score Robinson Chirinos to give Texas a 3-2 lead. Moreland homered again in the sixth to retake the lead 4-3. Andrus’ double to the left corner scored Adrian Beltre to make it 5-3 in the eighth. After falling behind 6-5, the Rangers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.

Notable: Moreland has eight-career multi-home run games, including three in the last month ... Five the Rangers’ seven hits were for extra-bases ... Padres pitcher and former TCU star Andrew Cashner pinch-ran in the late innings in both Friday and Saturday’s games.
