Rangers recap: Arizona snaps Gallardo’s streak, pin Texas with 7th straight home loss
Rangers right-hander Yovani Gallardo pitched another solid game but the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped his scoreless streak at 31 1/3 innings and pinned him with his first loss since May 19 with a 4-2 win Tuesday at Globe Life Park. The teams conclude the two-game series Wednesday night. The Rangers have lost four in a row and their past seven home games.
Pitching: Gallardo entered Tuesday’s start with a 29 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a run. He flirted with trouble through the first four innings but eventually found a way out of it. In the fourth, Gallardo had the bases loaded with one out after two walks and a single but Rougned Odor snagged a sinking liner at his feet and doubled up the runner at first to end the inning. In the fifth, a one-out triple from David Peralta put Gallardo’s scoreless streak in serious jeopardy. He walked the next batter and struck out Yasmany Tomas before Jake Lamb’s broken bat single to center scored two runs and gave Arizona a 2-0 lead. The Rangers added another run in the sixth and knocked Gallardo from the game on A.J. Pollock’s run-scoring single. Sam Freeman came in and ended the inning with a comebacker to the mound. Keone Kela pitched the seventh and allowed two hits but struck out two to strand both runners. In the eighth, Spencer Patton was lifted with one on and two hits for Ross Detwiler, who last two pitches before hitting a batter and being replaced by Tanner Scheppers. Scheppers got the final out but Arizona added another run to take a 4-0 lead with a single to right.
Hitting: Diamondbacks’ left-hander Robbie Ray held the Rangers hitless through the first four innings before Elvis Andrus singled through the right side with two outs in the fifth. Ray limited Texas to two base runners through the first six innings. Mitch Moreland singled through the left side with two outs in the seventh but Josh Hamilton grounded out to end the inning. In the eighth, Andrus led off with a three-base error on a misplayed ball in right and scored on Shin-Soo Choo’s fly out. Delino DeShields double to the left field corner and scored on Rougned Odor’s single to center to make it 4-2. Odor was on first when Prince Fielder grounded out to end the inning.
Notable: Gallardo’s scoreless innings streak of 31 1/3 innings is the third longest in Rangers history ... Gallardo trails only Kenny Rogers (39 innings in 1995) and Charlie Hough (36 innings in 1983) in Rangers history ... the Rangers faced a left-handed starter for the third consecutive game and fourth time in their past six games ... Texas pitching has allowed 60 hits combined in the past four games.
