Who is Tony Beasley, the Texas Rangers’ new interim manager? What to know
The Texas Rangers named Beasley their interim manager on Monday when they fired Chris Woodward. What should you know about Tony Beasley? Here are a few things that the astute Rangers fan may not know:
Long-time coach: Beasley has been coaching with the Rangers since 2015. He previously served as the Pittsburgh Pirates third base coach (2008-10) and the Washington Nationals (2006).
First-time manager: This is his first managing job in the major leagues, but he has managed in the minor leagues., beginning in 2001 with the Wiliamsport (Pa.) Crosscutters. He’s managed on several levels in the minors.
As a player: Drafted in the 19th round in 1989 by the Baltimore Orioles, Beasley spent nine seasons in the minor leagues and never played a major league game. He batted .260 in 85 minor-league games. Primarily an infielder, he also pitched in eight minor league games.
Cancer battle: He missed the 2016 season while battling cancer. After being diagnosed as cancer free, he returned to the team in 2017.
The singer: Performed the national anthem before a Pirates-Rockies game on July 30, 2008.
The stats: Beasley is 55, born on Dec. 5, 1966, in Fredericksburg, Va.
