Two days after jaw surgery, Rangers’ Willie Calhoun close to leaving Phoenix hospital
Texas Rangers left fielder Willie Calhoun is expected to be discharged from a Phoenix hospital Wednesday, two days after having surgery to repair his broken right jaw.
Calhoun was hit by a 95 mph fastball in the first inning of a spring training game Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Calhoun is in good spirits according to teammates, including Joey Gallo who has twice visited him in the hospital. Calhoun isn’t suffering from any massive swelling near his mouth. He was airlifted to St. Joseph’s hospital in Phoenix from the Rangers’ spring training facility in Surprise moments after the accident.
“He is doing really well,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. “He’s in good spirits and seems to be in a good spot mentally and physically, thankfully.”
Daniels said if Calhoun isn’t released Wednesday, it’s likely to be Thursday. “He’s expected to be here in camp on Friday — stirring it up with the guys,” he said.
Calhoun has yet to be tested for concussion symptoms, per MLB protocol, but the club is cautiously optimistic he’ll be clear. He’ll be tested once he’s able to step up his physical activity, such as running on a treadmill, Daniels said.
The club hopes Calhoun will be able to return to Texas with the team but that will depend on doctor’s clearance.
