Texas Rangers still willing to make additions, but may be out on Nicholas Castellanos

The Texas Rangers continue to look outside the organization for roster help, general manager Jon Daniels said Saturday, and a trade is a more likely avenue than free agency.

That would appear to close the door on Nicholas Castellanos, the best remaining right-handed free-agent bat, as well as any of the remaining relievers who would merit a multi-year contract.

And don’t get too excited about a bigger fish thought to be available. Daniels said a blockbuster deal for Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado is unlikely, and he also said that talks with other clubs have not advanced far enough for a deal to be imminent.

The Rangers, Daniels said, might look the same next month for the first full-squad spring workout as they do today.

“You can always get better,” Daniels said after a 30-minute Q&A during the Comerica Peek at the Park. “There’s certainly some areas that we’d like to add, at minimum, some depth if not upgrade. But, yes, I feel good overall about what we’ve been able to do.”

The Rangers have been linked recently to Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte, a Gold Glove-winning center fielder, as well as free-agent right-handed reliever Pedro Strop.

The Rangers have long been one of the teams thought to have interest in Arenado and have discussed a trade with the Rockies. The situation in Denver seems fluid, with Arenado saying that he has been disrespected by some in the organization.

Daniels said the trade market could still be developing after spring training begins.
