Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers players have wanted baby-blue uniforms. They’ll get them in 2020 season.

Change is upon the 2020 Texas Rangers.

A new ballpark.

New players.

New uniforms.

Their new duds for the 2020 MLB season were shown off for the first time Wednesday, with Globe Life Field in the background and right-hander Kyle Gibson in town for a physical exam ahead of joining the team.

And the changes to the uniforms, the first since 2014, are notable.

Gone from the front of the Rangers home white jersey is “Texas,” replaced by the script “Rangers.” Gone from home games are the royal blue tops that were preferred by starting pitchers Mike Minor and Lance Lynn.

Gone, too, is the daily guessing game for fans on what jersey the Rangers will be wearing.

New to the lineup is the baby-blue uniform, which generated most of the buzz during the unveiling at Texas Live!

“With the new uniforms going into the new stadium, we might as well,” All-Star outfielder Joey Gallo said. “This is what everyone is going to talk about. The other uniforms are great, but they still implement what we had last year a little bit. But these are different. I think they’re going to be good for the fans and for us.”

The Rangers will wear the baby blues, tops and pants and caps, for all Sunday home games. They also have the script Rangers across the front. A red uniform with Texas on the front will be worn every home Friday.

Those jerseys are very similar to the red ones worn by the Rangers the past decade, but the hats will feature a logo with “TX” in the middle of an outline of the state.

The Rangers will continue wearing grey or blue tops on the road with Texas across the chest, and the same blue caps with a block T. All teams will feature a patch to commemorate the first season at Globe Life Field.

“I think it looks a little different having ‘Rangers’ instead of ‘Texas,’” manager Chris Woodward said. “It reminds me of the Rangers I grew up watching.”

Commemorating the past was part of the theme in going forward into the new uniforms. The Rangers weren’t looking to rebrand themselves, but they wanted to freshen their brand ahead of moving into Globe Life Field.

They also wanted consistency, hence the assignment of dates for the red tops and baby blues. The Rangers will wear white jerseys for all other home games, though that day’s starting pitcher will choose a red or blue hat.

“Something you haven’t seen in the past is a consistent representation of when we wear what we wear,” executive vice president Joe Januszewski said. “What we’re doing here is providing real consistency, not just for our players but for our fans.”
